Strontium (Sr)

ATSDR-confirmed: children absorb more strontium; displaces calcium in bone

ATSDR (CDC)EPA

Overview

Strontium is chemically similar to calcium. The ATSDR confirms that children absorb more strontium due to active bone growth, and excess strontium can cause bone development problems when dietary calcium is low. Stable strontium ingested in high amounts can replace calcium in the skeleton. The ATSDR warns growing children are especially vulnerable. Independent laboratory analyses of rain and soil have found elevated strontium co-occurring with aluminum and barium.

How It Is Deployed

Strontium is found in mixed-metal particulate compositions. It settles from the atmosphere and accumulates in soil, where it enters the food chain through crops and livestock, and in water systems reaching municipal supplies. Strontium isotope analysis provides a method for tracking its movement through the environment.

Environmental Impact

Strontium accumulates in topsoil and is taken up by plants, entering the food chain through crops and livestock. It contaminates freshwater systems and is persistent in the environment. Independent analyses in agricultural regions have identified strontium levels that exceed natural background concentrations.
