Overview
Ultrafine particles (UFPs) are smaller than 0.1 micron — roughly a thousand times thinner than a human hair — and engineered nanoparticles can be smaller still. At this scale, the human body has no effective defense. The respiratory system's normal filtration (nasal hairs, mucus, cilia, and immune cells) is designed to trap larger particles; ultrafine particles slip past all of it. The EPA states that the smallest particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and get into the bloodstream, and research published by Diamond Light Source (2021) demonstrates that nanoparticles can cross the blood-brain barrier — the protective barrier that normally keeps foreign substances out of the brain. Once inside the body, there is no biological mechanism to filter or expel them, so they accumulate in the blood, organs, and brain.
How It Is Deployed
Ultrafine particles form from high-temperature combustion — including aircraft and jet engine exhaust — and from the atmospheric conversion and dispersal of aerosols. Because they are so light, they remain suspended in the air far longer than larger particles and travel long distances from their source before being inhaled. Sulfur dioxide released for stratospheric aerosol injection also converts into fine and ultrafine sulfate particles that descend to ground level, where people breathe them.

Environmental Impact
Ultrafine particles remain airborne far longer than larger particulate matter, allowing them to travel long distances and affect populations far from the emission source. They settle into soil and water where they persist, and their extremely small size makes them difficult to monitor with conventional air quality equipment, so exposure is frequently underestimated.
